Rear loaders are primarily used for residential collection, however commercial applications exist as well. The low loading height and large hopper area allows for easy loading of waste - including bulky waste or "White goods" (refrigerators, stoves, etc.). This type of truck is easily outfitted with a cart tipper.

Interestingly, commercial use for rear loaders is located in both dense downtown areas, and more rural areas as well. Downtown, where space is at a premium, the more agile rear loader is able to navigate the alleys and curbsides. In the country, it might not be economical to send a front loader for remote commercial stops - so a rear loader equipped with a drum winch or cylinder winch can fit the bill. These options allow for collection of large rear loader containers of up to 8 cubic yards in volume.
